With much of the world - and parts of the country - off-limits, Napierites will be hungry for some culture and some escapism heading into summer.

The annual Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival serves up both with a programme of films on offer at Napier’s Century Theatre from 18 November to 5 December.

Night of the Kings will take viewers on a fantasy journey with expert storytelling and rounds out a packed opening weekend. This includes opportunities to get down and dirty with Truffle Hunters, stand up and fight with protestors documented in Patu!, and be dew-eyed with quirky love story Bergman Island.

Whānau Mārama also provides audiences with rare opportunities to see NZ-made films including art films Signed, Theo Schoon, and Fiona Clark: Unafraid. Both are perfectly placed in the MTG, home to Hawke’s Bay main official art and object collection.

“We are thrilled to have the film festival back for movie goers, even at a limited capacity, and the films look amazing. It is wonderful to have it at this time of year for a change and perfect weather to enjoy a meal out either before or after a movie” says Laura Vodanovich, MTG Director.

Based in the beautiful Century Theatre, Whānau Mārama: NZIFF offers locals the chance to get dolled up and enjoy an evening out in stunning surroundings and within close strolling distance to the hospitality opportunities of central Napier.

Key facts:

  • The festival runs from Thursday 18th November to Sunday 5th December.
  • Tickets are available over the counter at MTG Hawke’s Bay or online with no booking fees, or find them through Eventfinda. Door sales will be available.
