The Hippocampe All-Terrain wheelchair is designed for people with disabilities, so they can be involved in outdoor activities with family and friends.
As part of our Disability Strategy Napier City Council have purchased an All-Terrain wheelchair for community use.
The special design of the chair means it can be taken to most outdoor locations. Westshore, Waimarama, Ocean Beach, Waipatiki are some of the beautiful, and accessible beaches in Hawke’s Bay that you could visit and enjoy, within the Hawke's Bay area.
Ahuriri Estuary Walk, Marewa Walk, Round the Islands, Taipo Stream, Church Road, Park Island Loop and the Rotary Pathway are some of the easy to medium grade walkways that you can take, and see some spectacular scenery along the way. A great leisure activity for many, including people with wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
Hawkes’ Bay Trails is one of New Zealand’s best, year-round cycling destinations. There is nearly 200 kilometres of scenic trails and spectacular views of rivers, the Pacific Ocean, vineyards and mountains.
The All Terrain Wheelchair offers individuals with disabilities of any age, accessibility to difficult terrains, impossible in a standard wheelchair: beach, sand, swimming area, hiking trails.
Towed, pushed or self-propelled, the All Terrain wheelchair offers autonomy to its user, a third party can assist the more heavily handicapped, and in the ocean with its push bar or traction kit.
The All Terrain Wheelchair is made for the beach and the great outdoors. The balloon wheels will allow you to cross the sand, get over small obstacles, go right into the sea, and floats while you have a swim (you must be accompanied while doing this). Or go on forest trails, country walks and enjoy simple pleasures with family and friends.
Designed by a team of specialist paramedics and tested and approved by people with restricted mobility, the wheelchair adapts itself to each person’s specific needs and requirements. Sturdy, reliable and safe, you can place complete trust in it.
Collapsible weight is 14kg, and can be transported in the boot of most cars. This lightweight chair is easy to maneuver in all situations, for users of all ages. Accessibility and transfers are made easy to the low seat of the all terrain wheelchair. Its neutral buoyancy design allows it to be used in or out of the water. The double width wheels make travelling on sand simple.
Comfortable: The seat is composed of a thick and hydrophobic foam that does not absorb water and dries quickly. The frame is comfortable to the touch and does not heat up in the sun.
The all-terrain wheelchair is available to use free of charge, however a refundable bond of $50 is required when booking the wheelchair.
There are two ways to book the All Terrain Wheelchair, complete the online booking form or download and complete the printable form.
Click on this link to complete the online booking form. Once this is completed you will receive an email confirming your booking. The All-Terrain wheelchair pick up and drop off is at Napier Aquatic Centre.
