Urban Waterways Study

We are two years through our three-year study of our waterways, which will help us decide the best options to improve the quality of the water flowing into Te Whanganui-a-Orotū (Ahuriri Estuary).

This study is jointly funded by us and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council - $100,000 each every year for three years. The HBRC shares responsibility with us for many of the city’s major waterways.

The NCC funding comes from the Ahuriri Estuary and Coastal Edge Masterplan, which proposes a series of projects dedicated to preventing further degradation of the estuary, including a proposal to develop a wetland to cleanse the drainage water and stormwater from the urban waterways.

The data we have collected so far and over the rest of the time of the study will determine what type of treatment devices are used, and where we put them, for the types of contaminants we have.

So far we have collected data in all sorts of weather and seasons from 25-plus sites to gain a better understanding of water quality across rural, residential, commercial and industrial zones.

Our monitoring now takes place at 20 sites every 6 weeks. Once a year we will be taking sediment samples, twice a year doing ecological assessments, and visual observations once a week.
