Thames-Tyne Remediation

This project researched the quality of the beds of the waterways in the Pandora Industrial area. Over decades, heavy metals, rubbish and oils have flowed into the Pandora stormwater network, accumulating and eventually settling on the bottom of the Thames and Tyne waterways.

These waterways directly connect to Te Whanganui a Orotu (Ahuriri Estuary).

Sediment core samples (taken down to an approximate depth of one metre) were collected from the Thames and Tyne waterways in the Pandora Industrial area in November 2020.

Understanding sediment quality in these waterways helps to build a picture of their environmental state. This understanding assists planning to enhance the ecological quality of the Thames and Tyne waterways. As these feed into Te Whanganui a Orotu, improving their quality would be good news for the estuary.

Interestingly, the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake was observed in these samples. There was a distinct change from silts to sands indicating the change of environment with the uplifting of land and seabed.
