Napier Assist Āwhina Tāngata is a group of dedicated kaitiaki offering a helping hand to locals and visitors, ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience in our city.
The service launched in June 2022 with a focus on the Napier CBD and plans to expand to other commercial centres as the team and service evolves. Āwhina Tāngata means ‘assisting people’.
The team is made up of six dedicated Napier Assist Āwhina Tāngata officers who work varying shifts, generally between the hours of 7am-6pm.
Napier Assist officers act as champions for Napier, actively interacting with businesses and public and providing a social connection for visitors to the city. They also work to de-escalate issues and reduce public exposure to nuisance behaviour from other users.
The Napier Assist Āwhina Tāngata team works closely with Napier City Business Inc, Police and other support agencies to make Napier a safe, attractive and thriving city.
The team also keeps an eye on areas of interest through monitoring Napier City Council’s Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) and any other surveillance equipment in a secure control centre.
