Accessed from Cumberland Rise in Taradale, the Sugar Loaf hill (or Pukekura, which is its Maori name), is a prominent landmark that can be seen from most parts of Napier and Taradale.
From the summit, the four-hectare reserve affords views out over Napier, Taradale and much of the Heretaunga Plains. The Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges can be seen to the west.
Walkers can take an access track across the grazed pasture to the lookout. A survey trig station is established at the summit.
