Napier City Council’s archive collection represents the corporate memory of the Council, documenting the Council’s functions and activities and offering a unique record of our city over time. The records contain a wide range of historical information about the Hawkes Bay region, the city, and our people which makes them an invaluable research resource.
Corporate records and archives for Napier City Council are managed through the Records Management team. The collection is primarily housed off-site, however arrangements for viewing can be made on appointment if required. Some records date back as far as 1875, and include a wide variety of records from maps and plans to letters and minute books.
Genealogical researchers should please note that unfortunately Napier City Council does not have many records relating to historical buildings and their occupants, as these records largely rely on historical rates records. Council has very few historical rates records, as these seem to have been destroyed during either the 1931 earthquake or due to misguided staff in the past.
Requests for general information can be made directly to the Records Management Lead, however requests for official information can be made through the Governance team.
