Hundreds of fish species - including sharks and stingrays - along with kiwi, tuatara and a waddle of the naughtiest penguins in existence are just some of the attractions at the National Aquarium of New Zealand.
If you're visiting the region, make sure that a visit to the National Aquarium of New Zealand is definitely on your to do list while in Hawke's Bay.
With so much to see and do you'll need to allow two hours to take in the displays and activities on offer at the aquarium.
Visit around 10am or 2pm and you will see the exciting diving displays where the feeding demonstrations never fail to delight! Alternatively Penguin feedings at 9.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm can be an ideal opportunity to see these fascinating creatures up close!
The moving walkway is also great fun where you can be mesmerized as it spirals you along underneath the Oceanarium and you truly feel like you're part of an underwater adventure. You'll see hundreds of fish species, including a variety of sharks and stingrays.
We also offer 'Close Encounters' for the more adventurous with the chance to feed the Penguins a popular choice. Details are available on request but make sure you book well in advance as spaces are limited.
Other animals and marine life to see at the aquarium include kiwis, seahorses, piranhas, a sea turtle, and eels.
A detailed business case for a redefined National Aquarium will be presented to central government towards the end of 2019. This will outline the costs and the benefits. If all goes well, Napier could have a new aquarium sometime around 2025. For more details, visit Project Shapeshifter.
