Crash data and vehicles recorded at travelling at high speeds are among the reasons for traffic calming measures being added to this Marewa street.
Raised intersections and speed cushions are being added to Douglas McLean Ave.
Crash data collected over the previous 10 years shows there have been a number of crashes on this street, with many speeding vehicles. Some have been recorded at speeds nearing 125 km/h an hour, in a 50 km/h zone
The responses received during community engagement with affected residents has been a factor in the decision to pursue construction in 2023.
The intersections that are being raised are the Barker Road and Herrick Street junctions with Douglas McLean Ave.
There are 24 speed cushions, in sets of 3, being added to this street, which runs from Alpers Terrace, near Taradale Road, through to Nuffield Ave, just past Whitmore Park.
The speed cushions are of a size and shape that have less impact on larger vehicles and buses.
They are similar to those installed on Shakespeare Road and Milton Road during the Safer Routes to Schools project, funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Innovating Streets for People programme.
Traffic management will be in place as required, to allow residents access and other road users to move safely through the area. Road users are advised to expect delays and take extra care.
