Napier City Council is considering ways to improve Napier’s resilience against natural hazards, like flooding, coastal erosion, inundation and liquefaction.

Various options are included in a Natural Hazards Issues and Options Paper. Council is seeking public feedback on the options throughout March. The Paper will form part of the Proposed District Plan.

Napier Mayor, Kirsten Wise, explains that public feedback will help shape the direction the council takes.

“The impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle mean we need to rethink how natural hazards are addressed in our District Plan,” says Mayor Wise. “Since we created the current District Plan, we have a lot more technical information, expert knowledge and understanding of the risks we are facing.”

“Napier is already susceptible to a number of different natural hazards and their impacts are going to become more frequent as the climate warms, so we need to make sure we do our best to build in a way that is resilient.

“I really encourage everyone to provide feedback on the options so a range of perspectives can be considered.”

Following this pre-engagement, formal consultation will take place later this year once the Natural Hazards chapter has been written. To find out more, people can view the options and give feedback from 1-29 March at sayitnapier.nz

Alternatively, the Natural Hazards Issues and Options Paper, along with hard copy submission forms, are available at Napier City Council Customer Service Centre at 215 Hasting St, Napier or at the Napier or Taradale Libraries.
