Exploring Hawke’s Bay places this summer will be enriched through a visit to MTG Hawke’s Bay.
The museum and art gallery is holding an exhibition that shares the stories behind local places and their names. Pūrākau o Te Whenua opens in the Linkway Gallery on Saturday 23 December.
Laura Vodanovich, Director of MTG Hawke’s Bay, explains the show gives visitors an opportunity to build a stronger link between places they love and the legends behind them.
“For visitors and locals, it’s wonderful to discover or rediscover places through these stories, whether it’s learning about the origins of their name or hearing stories from people who live there and know the history,” Laura says.
“Stories strengthen our sense of place, our identity, connection and belonging,” says Laura. “This is an exhibition for everyone in Hawke’s Bay to come and learn from, enjoy and share with others.”
Each pūrakau – or story – in the show shares a cultural and historic connection to a specific place in Hawke’s Bay. Places featured include Pania, Te Mata, Lake Waikaremoana, Waiatai Valley and Moumoukai.
As well as artifacts from the Hawke’s Bay Collection, the show features video interviews with Hawke’s Bay people sharing legends from their specific area.
