Twelve young people will have the chance to be the first to create and collaborate on ocean conservation in Hawke’s Bay’s inaugural Ocean Youth programme.
Ocean Youth will be held at the National Aquarium of New Zealand from 13th to 18th December. It will give 14 to 18 year olds a unique opportunity to get involved in various aspects of marine conservation, with a focus on Hawke’s Bay’s kororā, or little penguin.
Ocean Youth is an international organisation with events held in New Zealand, Australia and Asia. National Aquarium of New Zealand Education Manager Amy Stevens says it’s a privilege to be able to host Hawke’s Bay’s first event.
“We saw a unique opportunity to be able to educate Hawke’s Bay youth about our local marine environment,” says Amy.
“Here at the Aquarium, our kororā sanctuary provides refuge for penguins that have been injured or become sick in their natural habitats. We will give our Ocean Youth participants an up close experience with kororā, and the chance to speak with experts about the dangers our penguins face in their natural environment.”
The Aquarium’s Ocean Youth programme will also give young people the chance to connect with an environmental scientist and national and global researchers. They will also learn other skills, such as how to successfully design and implement a coastal conservation marketing campaign to engage the public into action.
“Ocean Youth covers a variety of professional disciplines that will help young people to decide what they might like to focus on in their future education,” says Amy.
