Student Studio reopens for the summer

Published: 3 December 2019

Last Updated: 4 December 2019

A vibrant co-working space for students opens today for the summer in Lower Emerson Street.

Napier City Studio opened for the first time last year and led to a variety of student industry projects with Napier CBD businesses.

The studio is a collaboration between EIT, Napier City Council and University of Waikato. It provides students with a space for work-based projects or summer research scholarship assignments.

The studio will open weekdays from 10am to 4pm and will be managed by various EIT students. Their role is to greet potential clients and assess their needs, deal with public enquiries about study options at EIT and the University of Waikato, and schedule bookings for the shared spaces and equipment.

Also using the space are University of Waikato summer research students, who are conducting 10-week research projects in collaboration with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Guthrie Smith Trust, and Biodiversity Hawke's Bay. These projects include topics in environmental planning, ecology and conservation.

Napier City Council’s Paulina Wilhelm, Manager of City Development, was the original instigator of the idea, having seen student studios in action in our sister city Victoria and Vancouver, Canada.

“I saw the potential of this project in Napier so I am delighted it is happening again this year,” says Paulina.

“It provides a win-win outcome for everyone. The students gain real work experience and credits for the studies. EIT and the University of Waikato promote their courses, businesses get free help from students and Council benefits by activating Lower Emerson Street and gaining more meaningful engagement from the community.

Regan Cotter, EIT Business School lecturer and work placement coordinator, says, “The City Studio really facilitates the connection between students and local industry. It’s not only a great opportunity to network but also to showcase the calibre of both students and lecturers.”

Last year Napier City Studio averaged 14 visitors a day. This was a combination of businesses needing assistance with things like marketing, graphic design, website development and also the general public enquiring about enrolment and course options.

Businesses are welcome to call in and discuss any projects they would like students to work on over the summer.

As an added bonus the City Studio will also have two “Artists in Residence.” Two EIT IdeaSchool students will have exhibition space within the City Studio, giving them a unique opportunity to launch their careers and contributing a creative buzz to the work of the Studio.

Napier City Studio will be open until mid-February. More details can be found at www.napiercitystudio.co.nz
