Water Safety Napier Harding Road Beach

As the weather heats up and the summer holidays begin, Napier City Council is urging beach goers to be vigilant when cooling off at Napier beaches.
Marine Parade beach in particular is completely unsafe for swimming due to a steep drop-off, strong undertow and unpredictable waves.
Napier Mayor, Kirsten Wise, says it is important the Napier community helps spread the word to visitors who may not be aware of the dangers.
“It looks inviting on a sunny day but locals know that it is hazardous and can be fatal,” explains Mayor Wise. “Our message is clear: stay well away from the water at Marine Parade.”
Permanent water safety signage along the 11km stretch of Marine Parade advises beachgoers of the dangers and risks of the Marine Parade beach.
Other areas of Napier’s coastline will be patrolled by surf lifeguards, and Mayor Wise is full of praise for the work they do in keeping people safe.
“We want locals and visitors alike to have a safe and enjoyable summer, making the most of our attractions, and we are grateful to our surf lifeguards who are dedicated to making this happen,” says Mayor Wise.
Patrolled beaches in Napier include Hardinge Road, Westshore Beach and Waipataki Beach.
The Pacific Surf Life Saving Club will have a tower based in front of the Harbour View Motel with flags located on Hardinge Rd Beach between Te Karaka (Perfume Point) and Spriggs’ Park. Surf lifeguard patrols are in place weekdays until Friday, 26 January and weekends until Sunday, 3 March 2024. Napier City Council continues to help fund the service.
