Frequently asked questions about Napier's mains cleaning programme.
To see which streets will be affected each day, view our schedule, which will be updated the day before cleaning occurs.
Alternatively listen to the radio stations The Hits (89.5FM), Newstalk ZB (90.3FM and 1278AM), Coast (99.9FM) and Gold Sport (1125AM) between 7.00am and 8.30am Tuesday to Friday.
It is likely for this to occur if you are using water at the same time as the cleaning is underway in your street (for example, flushing the toilet, hand washing, cooking). To resolve this, run your cold taps for 20 minutes. It should become clear once the mains cleaning works is completed in your street. Alternatively wait until 5 pm then flush the cold taps for 20 minutes (ideally an outside tap).
No, do not use your home appliances (e.g. washing machines, dishwashers, espresso machines, etc) during the day the cleaning is happening in your street. The mains cleaning will be completed by 5 pm. Before turning on any appliances, it is recommended to run the cold taps for five minutes.
No. All planned maintenance activities are communicated beforehand with residents affected and risks outlined.
Your water supply will not be affected before 9 am each day and works will finish by 5 pm. Cleaning will not be carried out on Mondays or over the weekend. Due to the nature of the work, potential breaks and unplanned repairs, it is not possible to advise exact time that your street will be cleaned.
The absence of the water team in your street does not imply the cleaning is not taking place – the pigs can travel up to 3 km between entry and exit point and can easily pass your place without you even noticing it.
Notification letters will be delivered to mailboxes of all properties affected on Saturdays, advising the cleaning commencing during the following week. Any unplanned maintenance and / or other events outside Council’s control (e.g. major infrastructure breaks) might affect our pigging areas schedule. Therefore it is not possible to foresee too far in advance which week your area will be cleaned. Business and essential customers will be approached individually prior to the scheduled cleaning week for that area.
Your water supply will not be affected before 9 am and works will finish by 5 pm each day. Cleaning will not be carried out on Mondays or over the weekend.
Onekawa industrial area is not scheduled for pigging but will be flushed instead. One Sunday will be dedicated for the flushing works and all businesses in the area operating on that day will be advised well in advance. The Water Team will do their best to work around your operations, therefore your feedback during at the time of notification is important.
Try rewashing it after 5:00 pm. You may need to rewash a couple of times. In most cases this works and removes dirty marks.
