The NCC Waste Team wants to support you on your organic waste journey. From introductory courses to practical hands on workshops, there is something for everyone.
Almost half of the waste going to our landfill is organic. This takes up valuable space when compacted with other waste. As organic waste decays in an anaerobic environment, it creates toxic gases, mainly methane (which is a greenhouse gas over 20 times stronger than CO2) and increases the volume of the toxic liquid soup that is leachate. Both are costly to deal with and a danger for our environment.
Three great options for managing your own organic waste are:
Alternatively, you can take it to BioRich or the Redclyffe Refuse Transfer Station. The rates for green waste is way less than mixed rubbish, so keep it separate. All these options help divert organic waste from our landfill and create nutritious organic matter for our Hawke's Bay soils, this benefitting our communities environment!
The Bokashi Bin is a Japanese system that pickles your waste (bokashi means fermentation) and is perfectly suited to small indoor spaces (it won’t smell). Food waste is added to the bin(s) then a sprinkling of a specialised bran that contains good bacteria is added. After several weeks, the contents can be dug into your garden for further disposal.
These systems can be made at home or purchased from the Environment Centre Hawkes Bay or your local gardening store.
