Civil Defence Communications Trailer
Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence and Emergency Management (HBCDEM) Group has a state-of-the-art trailer designed to be a self-contained multi-purpose communication base during a Civil Defence emergency. It is the first of its kind in New Zealand.
The trailer came about because of recognising the importance of efficient communication with emergency services after the recent tragedies in Canterbury and Japan.
Made in the USA, the trailer can be quickly deployed via road or air to provide communication via satellite, wireless, and UHF using copper, cellular, fibre and satellite anywhere in the country.
The trailer allows HBCDEM to continue with its response while allowing Council to continue business as usual. It ensures HBCDEM can use EMIS (Emergency Management Information System) even if all the networks are down, which is the system used across the country and endorsed by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM).
There is one pod equipped with specialist equipment stored in the trailer, but his can be modified depending on the needs of the disaster.
The trailer can be used for local and regional one-off events, a national resource when required and for non-disaster events in the region. This is done to practise the establishment of a connection as the volunteers are used to activate the system.
