Thirty plants were stolen overnight from Kennedy Park Gardens, bringing to 70 the plants taken in recent months.

Kennedy Park Rose Garden Theft Sept 2018 1

The Kennedy Park gardens have been the target of thieves over the past three months.

Napier City Council gardeners have been shocked by the removal of various plants from the carefully tended and popular gardens. They have worked hard to fill the gaps, but some of the latest plants stolen have been replacements for these earlier thefts.

Rosarian Jo Rhodes completely replanted the scented garden, which is for the blind and vision-impaired, over the past week, completing it only yesterday.

However, when she arrived at work this morning approximately 30 plants – lavenders, rosemary, curry and various herbs - to the value of $300 – were missing.

Over the past three months, 40 rose bushes have been stolen from the Kennedy Park gardens, valued at over $600.

Also missing were three more rose bushes, bringing the total number of roses removed over the past three months to 40. These plants were worth approximately $600. Replacement plants are being sourced.

The gardens are the venue for the Afternoon Tea Garden Party celebrating International Day of Older Persons this coming Monday, 1 October.

The thefts have been reported to Napier police. NCC asks anyone with information to approach the police.
