Digital inclusion at the heart of Older Persons Day

International Day of Older Persons 4 002

Napier’s older citizens can learn to compete with the younger generation by improving their digital know-how and their social connection at digital skills workshops at Napier and Taradale Libraries. The workshops are specifically targeted at older people, as part of International Day of the Older Person.

The workshops cover topics such as using smartphones, eBooks, video and messaging apps, internet banking, and how to stay safe online.

International Day of the Older Person is today, 1 October. This year, the day’s theme is “Digital inclusion for all”.

Councillor Greg Mawson, who holds Council’s Positive Ageing Portfolio, says the workshops will give confidence to older citizens who aren’t too familiar with technology.

“The digital workshops are all about inclusion. We want our older citizens to feel socially connected. Knowing how to say ‘hi’ to the grandkids on a video app will open up new opportunities for older residents who might only see their family in person occasionally,” says Councillor Mawson.

The Digital Skills Workshops are updated each term based on popularity. They can also be booked as group sessions for people who want to learn with friends. More information and online bookings can be found at napierlibrary.co.nz/services/free-digital-skills-workshops/, or else people can call in to the library for a chat.

Age Concern is also holding free Improving Confidence with Digital Technology workshops. Further information about these workshops is available by calling Age Concern on 0800 243 266.

Council also established its Positive Ageing Strategy Advisory Group this week. The Advisory Group has around 17 members from organisations and the community, and includes Councillor Mawson. The group will be chaired by Peter Grant, who is excited by the prospect of being able to contribute positively to the lives of all who are living in our wonderful city.

The Positive Ageing Strategy’s vision is of people in Napier ‘living well and ageing well’. The purpose of the Advisory Group is to provide leadership, guidance and support for implementation of the Strategy.

“As a Council, we believe providing access, equity, inclusion, participation and respect for our older residents is vital.  They give so much to our community, it’s awesome to give a little back” says Councillor Mawson.

“We will proactively share resources, information and experience to achieve the vision of the Strategy.”

International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is a United Nations initiative celebrated annually around the world. The day is a time for individuals, whānau and organisations to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution that older people make to communities throughout New Zealand.
