Napier Youth Strategy - Say it Napier

Published: 26 September 2018

What do young people think would make Napier a better place for them to live?

Positive Parenting Booklet Feb 2017 146 815 x 582

That’s one of the questions being asked of 12 to 24-year-olds, and their parents, over the next month during consultation on the draft Napier Youth Strategy.

Napier’s YCON – Napier Youth Council – have worked with Napier City Council to produce the draft.

There are six key objectives which YCON have helped shape; ensuring young people are thriving (healthy and safe), have opportunities to participate and take the lead (leadership), be engaged in and have options for learning (education), are ready to work, know what they want to do and how to get there (employment), are involved (community), and have access to a range of activities (fun).

Napier City Council’s vision is for Napier to be a vibrant and sustainable city for all. This strategy recognises young people are an important part of achieving this vision, says Antoinette Campbell, Director Community Services.

“The whole point of the strategy is to recognise what young people need, and encourage youth development through services, facilities and activities delivered by Council.”

A survey for anyone aged between 12 and 24, or who have children of that age, is running on the Say It Napier website, www.sayitnapier.nz, until 24 October.

The feedback received will help inform the final strategy, which is due to be adopted by Council in December, and the annual action plan which Council and YCON will develop to address the issues and achieve the strategy’s objectives.
