Hundreds of people came to Anderson Park yesterday morning (Sunday 22 July) to help Napier City Council celebrate the official opening of the new playground with the community.

Liam Reading, seven, who has muscular spinal atrophy type 2, was special guest at the ceremony, sharing the ribbon cutting duties with Napier Mayor Bill Dalton.

The Anderson Park Playground has been a popular destination with families since it was able to open early, last Monday. Mayor Dalton pointed out how much work had gone into developing it, with the input of a wide range of groups.  “Young or old, how could you not love this place? The equipment has been designed to challenge both young and old, the mobile and those who are less mobile. There really is something for everyone.”

The playground includes a mini tower that is wheelchair accessible via a ramp, with a double width slide so that caregivers can accompany their charges down the slide, a wheelchair accessible spinner, a spinning disc that can accommodate a less able bodied person, and a cradle swing for a less able bodied child.

Some of the artwork also contains messages in braille for the sight impaired, and there is a range of sensory equipment such as a large xylophone, musical bridge and drums, which are great for the sight impaired.

Younger children are provided for at the western end, and older children at the eastern end, where the skate bowl is.

The new toilet block, which will open shortly, also includes an adult change table in the accessible toilet. The existing toilet block is still open to the public for now.

The Anderson Park Playground was originally proposed in the Long Term Plan (LTP) 2015-25. Following its popularity with the public who made submissions during that LTP’s consultation period, NCC decided to bring forward its construction date.
