Exciting museum-based digital education programme starting soon

A partnership between MTG Hawke's Bay and Te Papa will bring two digital educators to our region.

MTG Hawke’s Bay is on the hunt for two tech-savvy educators to help roll out an exciting new digital programme around the region.

The museum is one of only three regional facilities in the country selected by Te Papa Tongarewa The Museum of New Zealand to deliver the Ministry of Education-funded digital learning programme, Raranga Matihiko – Weaving Digital Futures.

MTG Director Laura Vodanovich says it is an honour to have been chosen to deliver the new initiative alongside Auckland Museum and the Waitangi National Trust.

“Digital fluency is important in every facet of modern life and this innovative programme will provide access to digital technology to students who might otherwise not have the opportunity to experience technology-rich learning interwoven with the treasures of the region’s museum."

The programme’s roll out to selected Hawke’s Bay schools begins later this year, utilising cutting edge digital equipment. The full-time educators will work collaboratively to deliver individually-tailored lessons in English and te reo onsite at the museum, offsite at the schools and online.

MTG Hawke’s Bay is now seeking two qualified, experienced teachers - one of whom needs to be a fluent speaker of te reo Māori - to work with students, school staff and whānau for the duration of the programme.

The funding for Raranga Matihiko – Weaving Digital Futures comes from the Digital Technologies for All Equity Fund launched by Education Minister Chris Hipkins in March this year.

The Fund’s aim is to give less-advantaged students better access to digital tools, skills and knowledge, and is part of a Government-funded package to make digital technologies more accessible for students.

The focus of Raranga Matihiko – Weaving Digital Futures (which will run for up to three years) is to bring technology-rich learning to students, help them tell their own stories in a culturally relevant and meaningful way and ultimately offer them further options in the future.

It’s also a win:win scenario for the museums involved – students will be solving real-world problems but will also have increased access to national and local collections and exhibitions.

• Years 1-10 students in Decile 1-3 schools/kura kaupapa
• Schools/kura kaupapa within a 120km radius of MTG Hawke’s Bay
