Get ready to get Toasted!

Published: 6 June 2018

One of the great international culinary events - Hawke's Bay's homage to the humble toastie - returns on Saturday 23 June.

Toasted Mexi Mama

Looking forward to the big event: left to right, Mexi Mama's Jamie Buckley, Armanjut Kaur, Ishan Bajaj, Loveleen Kaur and James Pilling.

Tickets are selling fast to Hawke’s Bay’s showcase of the ultimate toasted sandwich, now less than a month away.

Toasted! was a popular and family friendly event at Winter F.A.W.C 2017, and organisers expect this year’s toastie taste-off will be equally well-received.

There are three newcomers to the Toasted! “battleground” on Saturday 23 June this year – Vagabond Jacks, Asian Diner and Mexi Mama – who will be using their culinary skills to create their own unique version of the Kiwi classic. They will be facing off against three of last year’s foodies – Carr’s Kitchen, The Picnic and Mamacita.

While the actual ingredients going into the toasties are very much a secret at this stage, Napier City Council Event Manager Kevin Murphy is promising something for everyone. “We don’t want to give too much away, but it’s safe to say if you have a sweet tooth, think a toastie should be savoury, or are adventurous enough to try something that will really make your tastebuds tingle, Toasted! is definitely for you,” he says.

NCC's Kevin Murphy: "We don’t want to give too much away, but safe to say if you have a sweet tooth, think a toastie should be savoury, or are adventurous enough to try something that'll really make your tastebuds tingle, Toasted! is definitely for you."

The event will be held at the same venue as last year - Shed 1, 2 Riddell Street, Ahuriri. It’s not your typical venue – during the week it’s used by a logging facility – but the big, bright, airy space is perfect for the bustling family-friendly atmosphere created by the mix of delicious smelling toasties, craft beer and cider served by B.A.D, and juice provided by The Apple Press.

Local musician Arahi and special guests White Chapel Jak will also be performing.

Tickets cost $25 for adults, and $10 for children. Under-3s are free of charge. The ticket price includes entry, entertainment and the first toasted sandwich portion, with the idea being that guests can sample all those on offer and vote for their favourite.

There'll be a People’s Choice award for the best toastie, and a mystery judge will taste each offering and make the call on the Most Tantalising Toastie.

Tickets are limited and available from Eventfinda.
