The Edge’s Guy and Megan: ‘We’ll accept bribes!’

Published: 7 November 2017

The Edge's Guy and Megan are coming to Bark Island this Saturday to judge the fiercely-contested dogwalk.

Guy Mansell on how contestants can get ahead: "Both Megan and I would take the same type of bribe that a dog would - food. So if by some miracle a bacon sandwich made its way to me then it wouldn’t hurt whoever put it there. Meg’s a vegetarian so an egg sandwich would work for her."

With just days to go until Bark Island: Doggie Day Out 2017, The Edge radio stars Guy Mansell and Megan Annear are straining at the leash to arrive in Napier.

The pair, who live together in Auckland and have together clocked up more than 55,000 fans on social media channels, are making a special trip to guest judge the dogwalk (or catwalk, as it’s more commonly known) at Napier City Council’s second annual dog-focused community event.

Held between 9:30 and 11:30am this Sunday 12 November at Park Island, the morning is a treat for both canines and their (somewhat) less hairy friends alike. With coffee and food available, and a variety of attractions such as a mobile photo booth and dog agility demonstrations, the day is fun for the whole family.

Guy (host of The Edge 30) and Megan (who is well-loved for her role as a daytime announcer, also on The Edge) sat down to chat about their upcoming trip.

Tell us about your favourite dog, real or fictional.

Guy: Just because somehow he’ll know if I say otherwise, my favourite dog is my family miniature schnauzer, Bertie. He’ll be 11 this year and he’s managed to get everyone in our family wrapped around his fingers (or paws!). He gets away with anything and he also gets anything he wants. And of course Meg's family dog Inca because I would never hear the end of it if I didn't include her too!

You’re not dog owners – why not?

Meg: Trust me, as soon as we manage to buy a house in Auckland (pray for us) we will be adopting a dog of our own. It’s one of the main reasons we want to own our own home, so that we are allowed more pets!

How do you feel about dogs that dress up?

Meg: Now look, we have tried to dress up our cat many a time, but she doesn’t have a bar of it. So we love seeing dogs strut their stuff, looking cute to boot in their get-ups! I haven’t seen many dogs dressed up in Ponsonby unfortunately, but if any Bark Island attendees are struggling for ideas, I love dogs as movie and book characters (Hairy Potter anyone?)

Your own fashion pedigree is, of course, vital when judging our dog fashion comp at Bark Island. What do you bring to the judging panel?

Guy: My fashion “pedigree” is quite simple - plain, clean T-shirts with jeans and boots. Usually a hat comes with the look too. So if I see a dog walking around with specifically that look then it’s going to get a 10/10 from me.

Any advice to Bark Island fans entering the Best Dressed Dog, Shiniest Coat, Most Like Owner or Best Trick categories?

Guy: Both Megan and I would take the same type of bribe that a dog would - food. So if by some miracle there were to be a bacon sandwich make its way to me then it wouldn’t hurt whoever put it there. Meg’s a vegetarian so an egg sandwich would work for her. Hypothetically of course.

Have you spent much time in Napier before?

Meg: No we haven’t! But we are looking forward to it so much. We have only heard incredible things so can’t wait to soak up the scenery, good weather and the FAWC Wine and Food fest!
