Exciting night for Napier

Published: 26 September 2017

Interactive art installations where anyone can add their artistic marks, live music, and Steampunk mystery are part of Napier’s first White Night celebration this coming Saturday, 30 September, from 7pm.

MTG at night

This free Harcourts Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival event involving 10 different venues is inspired by Nuit Blanche in Paris, France.

Taking part this year is MTG Hawke’s Bay, which has free entry all night, The Rabbit Room, the Boyd-Dunlop, SPA_CE, Viva and Tennyson Galleries, The Pencil Room, Wardini Books, Creative Arts Napier (CAN), and The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things.

Look out for some great tape art around MTG on the night. Other highlights of “Splendour at the Museum” include curators offering quick mini tours of exhibitions such as Freedom and Structure: Cubism and New Zealand Art 1930-1960, a pop up bar, and Paella A Go Go on the forecourt.

There are also two ticketed festival events at MTG Century Theatre on Saturday; The Kugels, performing at 5.30pm, and designer David Trubridge’s Beauty Matters at 8.30pm.

It’s fabulous to see a free, family friendly arts festival event in Napier this year, says Napier City Business Inc Manager Zoe Barnes. “White Night is the perfect opportunity to highlight the newly emerging Arts Quarter in the CBD and we look forward to showcasing our many creative businesses through such a unique and fun event.”

Just along from MTG, on Herschell Street, will be a laser light show after sunset and every hour on the hour, courtesy of Boom Factory.

The CAN hosts an interactive art installation and live performance by The Lemons, while other musicians will also be out and about in the CBD. Tyley Burkin, for example, will be performing songs inspired by the Boyd-Dunlop Gallery’s prints of creative icons.

The Pencil Room educational art studio, too, would like people to add their creative marks to a collaborative artwork celebrating White Night, while The Drama Workshop is asking for contributions from the public for a “magical” story from Dr Suess brought to life through shadow puppetry, with musical accompaniement by Michael Rowlands.

White Night doubles as a birthday celebration for Viva Gallery’s artists, who have just chalked up a year in their Hastings Street premises. They will all be on site on the night, intending to show off new work and do some creating on the spot.

Wardini Books Napier is asking people to play detective and get involved in solving the clues in an interactive Steampunk mystery.

Just across the road Tennyson Gallery is employing the services of live models to show off its contemporary New Zealand jewellery collection, as people can enjoy the paintings of Anthony Chiappin, and design work of Faculty, aka Hayden Maunsell and Tara Cooney

The Rabbit Room is hosting Full Circle, an exhibition of intricately hand-stitched drawings by Napier born artist Katherine Claypole, while The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things is offering a curated display of “craft curiosities and quirky oddities”.

Tomb Raiders, a collaborative exhibition by renowned ceramic artist Bronwynne Cornish and her partner, painter Denys Watkins, is showing at SPA_CE. Bronwynne last exhibited in Hawke’s Bay at MTG in 2014.
