A new toilet and shower block, similar in appearance to Ahururi's Spriggs Park Pavilion, is to be built at Pandora Pond.

Graham Weaver Architects have designed the new toilet and shower block at Pandora Pond.

Construction of a brand new public toilet and shower facility at Pandora Pond is underway.

This new facility, provided by Napier City Council, will replace the current ablution block, providing more toilets and changing rooms for the public to use, particularly during the peak summer season. NCC Chief Executive Wayne Jack says demand for suitable facilities in the area is ever growing, and with another summer just around the corner, it is expected to climb.

“Pandora Pond is becoming increasingly popular with residents, visitors and the number of events being held there is on the rise. Our local community has spoken to us about the requirement for better toilets and change facilities, and we’re really looking forward to delivering on this project in time for summer,” says Mr Jack.

N.C.C. CEO Wayne Jack: “Pandora Pond is becoming increasingly popular. Our local community has spoken to us about the requirement for better toilets and change facilities, and we’re really looking forward to delivering on this project in time for summer."

This work is expected to take until December to complete. “These ablutions will be well used,” Mr Jack says. “Currently we have three waka ama groups, optimist yachting and paddle boarding at the Pond as well as a wide range of walking and cycling opportunities around the margins of the Ahuriri estuary. Humber Street is an important stop-off. Pandora Pond is also the base for the Iron Maori events and Triathlon Hawke’s Bay’s summer competitions.”

NCC staff and contractors are working with the Pond’s regular users and sporting organisations to ensure there will be as little disruption to their planned events as possible. The current car park will be permanently closed – its replacement will not be built until after summer 2017/18.

The new facility, designed by Graham Weaver Architects, will look similar to the Spriggs Park Pavilion, off Hardinge Road in Ahuriri. When demand is low, one section can be closed off, with both sections able to be opened for public use at busy times.

Landscaping will be completed once the new car park has been built.
