Safety drives changes on Kennedy Road

Published: 25 August 2017

New signals at the Maadi Rd-Wycliffe St-Kennedy Rd intersection, scheduled to be finished in late November, will increase safety for all.

Improvements are being made to where Maadi Rd and Wycliffe St intersect with Kennedy Rd.

Safety is the key driver for the upcoming installation of new traffic signals and specialist cycle signals where Maadi Road and Wycliffe Street meet Kennedy Road.

At peak times just over 1500 vehicles pass through the intersection in an hour, with Kennedy Rd being one of the busiest vehicle routes in Napier. The delays experienced by vehicles crossing between the busy side roads of Maadi Road and Wycliffe Road can lead to frustration and drivers taking risks.

Jon Kingsford, NCC's Director Infrastructure: “It can be very difficult for motorists to move from road to road. These changes should relieve some of that stress, while also allowing cyclists and pedestrians to safely get across, or move down Kennedy Rd.”

Installing signals at intersections has long been recognised by traffic engineers as an excellent way to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Dedicated cycle phases will give waiting cyclists a green light earlier than motorists. This type of facility has only recently been introduced in New Zealand and Napier City Council is proud to be able to bring its benefits to the users of this busy cycle route.

Recent traffic surveys carried out by NCC led to the development of this project.

The planned changes should relieve the pressure at this intersection, says Jon Kingsford, Director Infrastructure. “During the morning and evening peak periods it can be very difficult for motorists to move from road to road. These changes should relieve some of that stress, while also allowing cyclists and pedestrians to safely get across, or move down Kennedy Rd.”

Work is due to begin in the area in September. There will be some disruption to traffic flow until late November, when the project is expected to be finished.
