Emergency Water Tanks a Coup for Napier Civil Defence

Published: 20 December 2016

Civil Defence water tanks. Napier City Council is helping residents prepare for an emergency by getting behind an initiative to sell emergency rain water tanks to the public.

Only the second Council in New Zealand to adopt the idea, Napier Civil Defence has negotiated a bulk order with tank manufacturer ‘The Tank Guy’ to provide 200-litre tanks and fittings for $110 each. Similar packages normally retail for approximately $200.

Napier Civil Defence Manager, Marcus Hayes-Jones, says he is pleased to be able to provide the tanks at such a reasonable price – especially because water is such a vital survival commodity during a Civil Defence emergency.

“The tank connects to a downpipe on your home or garage, where it collects and filters rain water. When the tank is full water continues into the storm water system,” Mr Hayes-Jones says.

“It is made of UV resistant, food grade plastic and is certified as meeting New Zealand standards for water storage. However, health advice is to boil all drinking water from the water tank in an emergency – just to be on the safe side!

“The great thing is a tank can be installed by the average person in approximately half an hour. Although, if you are not confident you may wish to get good plumbing and building advice from a professional. It is important the tanks are installed correctly and secured firmly to your dwelling without affecting the integrity of your building cladding. Tenants, remember to ask your landlord for permission before securing the tank to your dwelling.”

Holding 200 litres of water, the tanks come complete with all fittings and a 10-year manuafacturer’s warranty. However, people living near the coast should upgrade the hooks to stainless steel or galvanised alternatives.

The tanks are available for purchase and collection, while stocks last, from the Napier City Council, 231 Hastings Street, Napier. Each tank weighs 7.5kg when empty and at 1.2m high and 65cm wide is easily transportable in most cars.
