Keep waste out of the 'too-hard basket'!

Baby wise recycling car seats

Too big? Too awkward? Too tricky? Too risky! Some things seem hard to get rid of, but don’t put them in the ‘too-hard’ basket, there are solutions if you know where to go. Lots of information on waste solutions is in our A-Z Guide.

Children’s car seats can be dropped off at Baby on the Move Onekawa for just $10. Every year 100,000 car seats expire in New Zealand. That’s 500 tonnes of plastic, metal, webbing, textiles that head straight for the landfill! Through Seatsmart the majority of plastic is recycled into products for the building industry. Metal parts are taken to metal recyclers, and the harnesses are used in the production of very cool messenger bags.

Batteries can be taken to the Napier isite and Napier City Council customer services on Hastings Street. They must not be thrown into wheelie bins or recycling bins because even though they are recyclable they can start fires in the rubbish truck or at the transfer station.

Tyres can be dropped off at the Redclyffe Transfer Station. They will take up to five tyres free of charge. Before you drop them off, make sure they are de-rimmed and clean. Tyres are recycled through the TyreWise scheme, NZ's first regulated product stewardship scheme.
