Neighbours play a vital role in keeping communities going through good times and when things get challenging.
Getting to know those who live close to you is important for several reasons, says Colette Hall, Napier’s Neighbourhood Support Advisor.
“Emergency management has recognised how good it is to have an existing network of people who look out for each other. They use their different skills and strengths to get things done, and play a valuable role in passing along any important information if there is an emergency.”
Part of Colette’s role is to stay connected to local Neighbourhood Support group coordinators, passing along tips and resources from agencies like the Police, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand to improve household and neighbourhood safety. She also assists Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management, and Napier City Council’s Community Services team to share information about emergency preparedness.
