Makeovers restore historic Napier icons

The Veronica Sunbay has had much of its structure replaced. Remediations have been carefully designed to stay true to the original 1930s design while using some cutting-edge technology to keep the overhead panels light but durable.

Just as cherished is the Tom Parker Fountain, back lighting up the night sky in glorious colours. It was closed while essential remedial works took place nearby. This presented a great opportunity to do some preservation work on the Fountain as well as updating the lights and the pump system. We worked with a heritage architect to bring the Fountain back to its original colour scheme, this included revealing its stunning bronze spill-edge.

The nearby Soundshell and Colonnade recently picked up three awards at the Hawke's Bay Heritage Awards for the preservation work our teams have done on it. This is a special place, right in the heart of Napier, and the site of many community get-togethers and celebrations. Designed and built in the 1930s, the whole precinct was envisioned and funded by the infamous 30,000 Club who poured much time, energy and money into Napier from the early 1900s through to the mid-70s. Respecting their vision and ensuring we look after the landmarks they gifted to the city is important work for us.
