Books spring to mind for many when they think about a library, but that’s the tip of the iceberg!
Libraries help communities in many ways. One example at our library is the new ‘Memory Makers’ programme, currently being trialled in collaboration with Dementia Hawke’s Bay and due for roll out during 2025. Napier Library Innovation and Engagement Lead Keelie Parker says dementia affects more people than some might realise.
“Libraries are the perfect place to provide activities that help people affected by dementia to make and keep memories. With our new library coming, we have an amazing opportunity to create an inclusive environment for all people in our community.”
Napier Libraries also has its Forget Me Not collection including picture books without words, and books from the specialist publisher Dovetail Press, which are designed for people with dementia. Forget Me Not grab-bags are a convenient way to pick up a selection of books, large-piece puzzles, fidgets, and aqua paints to keep the mind and hands busy. Finding books about dementia is also simple, with all stored in one location with Forget Me Not stickers on the spines.
Napier’s new library, due to start construction in the middle of 2025, will have a dedicated area for activities such as Memory Makers that will be easily accessible, especially for older people.
