Most days of the week, Len travels from Flaxmere to spend a couple of hours tidying, weeding the lake edges and around paths, raking, sometimes watering where it is needed most. His voluntary work started 15 years ago as a way of giving thanks, he recalls.
“I brought my model boat over, to the (boat) lake, and looked around and thought there must be something I can do to help look after it.”
The sprightly 80-year-old has two radio-controlled boats, which he sails very occasionally on model boat club days. His latest weed eater, purchased with a Keep Napier Beautiful grant, at a discount from Stihl Greenmeadows, takes up most of the spare room in his vehicle. He saves his care and attention for the park’s trees and plants, the only plants he really likes to grow at home are tomatoes, he says.
“You couldn’t ask for anything better than this place. If you have the amenities, you need to take care of it.”
