This year we’ve carried out essential foundation works in and around the Parklands area.
Our aim is to complete the works as fast as possible so we can get the areas grassed and stop dust. For those in the area, we know it’s been challenging at times, especially when the windy weather makes the job harder!
Prior to Christmas we will close down the sites adjacent to Orotu Drive (Stage 2&4). Most of these stages will be hydroseeded to mitigate the effects of dust. In some areas, where hydroseeding isn’t possible, we will use a ‘locking agent’ to cap the ground to help eliminate dust as much as we can.
The whole site will be closed from Friday 20 December through to Tuesday 6 January. There will still be some workers on site applying water to the hyroseeded areas. This work will take place in the early morning or late afternoon. Water restrictions apply in Napier but it’s important to note that the water used onsite is not sourced from the city supply but instead comes from an independent bore.
Early in the new year, works will continue to bring the land up to its final levels and apply dust mitigation measures. As with the rest of the site, we’ve had the opportunity to use fully tested silt (from Cyclone Gabriel) at competitive rates by partnering with the Silt Recovery Task Force.
The next area to be developed is the field behind Aspiring Drive towards Park Island (Stage 3). During this part of the operations, a new fence will be constructed near the footpath of Aspiring Drive. Silt is currently being stockpiled in one corner.
It’s essential that members of the public do not enter the site where we are working. This applies 24/7, either in work-hours or outside of them. Site access for this area will remain via Orotu Drive. All trucks exiting the site will use the wheel-wash system. Initial security works and some carting to this site will begin in December.
As you may be aware, Napier’s water use has meant the city moved into water restrictions earlier than it has in previous years. This issue was exacerbated by a dry winter and very hot weather in early December. We do use water for key components of the Parklands work programme. It is an important part of the construction process. It’s used when laying the materials in the ground to ensure compaction targets can be achieved, and also to help reduce dust. The water we use onsite comes from an independent bore, rather than from the public water utility (city supply). Most of the water we use onsite is deployed using water carts so we can be specific about where it is applied. We are currently developing a sprinkler system that will help with dust control on the perimeter of the site.
