Hawke’s Bay Disc Golf Club president Leon Crellin, left, with Tye Engelke, 16, the national under-18 champion, following a trial run on the first hole (basket) of Napier’s new disc golf course at Anderson Park.

People are invited to give disc golf a go at the opening of Napier’s first dedicated course at Anderson Park next Friday, 20 December.

Napier City Council has been working with the Hawke’s Bay Disc Golf Club for the past two years to find the best location for a course.

Napier city councillor Graeme Taylor, who holds the sport and recreation portfolio, explains the Council’s development on the York Ave side of the Park grew from a desire to find ways to activate parts of green space that weren’t used very often.

“Anderson Park’s been a popular place for families and visitors to spend time in for decades. The introduction of another facility extends the range of experiences we can offer people in our open spaces,” says Councillor Taylor. “The extension to the destination playground and the work that’s nearing completion in the surrounding area are going to make it even more attractive to our community. Together, these activities make the Park a central hub for social connection and recreation”

Hawke’s Bay Disc Golf Club members are looking forward to sharing their passion for the game with the Napier community, says Leon Crellin, president of the Club.

“It’s relatively quick and easy to learn, but hard to master, and being an all-ages, family-friendly sport, it’s something you can do on your own, with a group of friends or whānau. Next Friday’s event, from 2pm, is open to anyone who would like to try it out,” says Leon, who also explained that the club will have discs to loan out at the opening event.

Disc golf broadly follows the same rules as traditional golf, but involves throwing a disc from a tee to hit an above-ground target in as few throws as possible. The Hawke’s Bay club also has courses at Flaxmere Park, Blackbridge, Haumoana, and Te Pohue. The sport began in California in 1975, taking off in the past few years. There are now 15,000 courses globally, including nearly 100 in New Zealand.
