Five hundred parcels will be packed up and delivered to families and individuals this year with help from the annual Christmas Cheer appeal.
The appeal has been running for 48 years with Napier City Council partnering with Hawke’s Bay Today to make it happen.
Napier Mayor Kirsten Wise explains the relationship between the organisations and the public is essential to the success of the initiative every year.
“This is something we all believe in and we all get behind, with our staff helping out with their collecting buckets. The real heroes are the community who always find extra to contribute to the collection,” says Mayor Wise. “With everyone chipping in, we make a little stretch a long way and there are really deserving families and individuals who benefit.”
The Napier Christmas Cheer Appeal is open now for people who want to contribute. All money donated goes towards purchasing groceries for the Christmas Cheer hampers, which are gifted to older people living alone and to families.
The street appeal is on Friday 6 December. Napier City Council staff will be out on the streets with Christmas Cheer collection buckets.
“Thank you to everybody who has given so generously before, and to those of you who will do so this year,” Mayor Wise says.
Donations can be made online until 20 December here, or in person at the Council Customer Service Centre, or the Napier Libraries.
Gifts and non-perishable food items will also be accepted at the following locations:
