Feedback on future of Napier’s freedom camping sought

Proposals for the future of Napier’s freedom camping areas are aimed at enhancing the experience for visitors travelling in self-contained vehicles.

Napier City Council adopted the Statement of Proposal (SOP) and the Draft Freedom Camping Bylaw 2024 for consultation at a meeting earlier today.

Recent changes to the Freedom Camping Act by central government are behind the reconsideration of the number and locations of parks available to mobile travellers, says Kirsten Wise, Napier Mayor.

“Freedom camping bylaws are designed to regulate where and how people can camp on public land. The law change presents an opportunity to see if there’s a better way to do this, one that works for all our visitors and our community,” explains Mayor Wise.

“We recognise the contribution freedom campers make to our economy, and want them to feel welcome, and safe here.”

Consultation opens on Monday 4 November and will close on 29 November. Further details, and an online submission form will be available on sayitnapier.nz from Monday.

Council will consider submissions at a hearing in February next year.
