Historic home goes straight to the heart

In the heart of Napier’s historic Ahuriri neighbourhood, Shepherd’s Cottage stands as a cherished landmark, meticulously restored by Lizzie Russell, local writer and gallery owner.

The Cottage is a 36-square-metre, onebedroom home in Battery Road, dating back to the 1850s. It’s a proud example of Ahuriri’s rich heritage and architectural charm, and one of the oldest houses in Napier.

Officially listed as a Category II heritage building by Heritage New Zealand, it offers a glimpse into the area’s storied past.

Lizzie’s restoration journey has been deeply intertwined with her love for Ahuriri.

The transformation of Shepherd’s Cottage— from weathered dark grey cladding to fresh white facade—reflects both her dedication and the vibrant spirit of the neighbourhood. Modern updates like insulation and new windows ensure the home is comfortable while preserving its historical essence, in line with Heritage New Zealand’s guidelines.

“I have put a lot of thought into it and have particularly enjoyed landscaping the grounds and playing with the interior,” Lizzie says. “It’s been a great challenge with such a small space.”

Lizzie was captivated by the cottage’s historical charm, but her affection extends to Ahuriri itself, a neighbourhood she describes as “the coolest” with its blend of interesting homes and buildings steeped in history.

“I love hearing the Port and trains, and I’m just a short walk to Port beach where I swim all year round. I work in the CBD so it’s an easy walk or electric scooter commute.”

Shepherd’s Cottage, nestled in the Tram Shelter Historic Heritage Precinct, is one of three iconic cottages in this historically rich area. The precinct, which includes Fitzgerald House and other early European architectural gems, preserves a significant slice of Napier’s early development.

For Lizzie, living in Ahuriri is a daily celebration of the neighbourhood’s historical and modern allure. “We live in paradise,” she says.
