Spring 2022 4

Our gardeners plan what we’ll see in our public gardens six months before the first shoots and buds show up.

Each garden has its own micro-climate. For example, the garden beds closest to the sea are blasted by salt-laden spray and strong winds so they need low growing, hardy plants. Just as important, is providing a mix of native plants and introduced species that attract birdlife.

Our nursery nurtures 50,000 annuals each year. Straight after Hawke’s Bay Anniversary Weekend, the latest lot of tiny seedlings will start to be planted out for summer.
