Napier and Hastings Councils are encouraging people to be smart about where they park with parking fines going up across the country from today.

Parking fines are set by central government, unlike parking fees, which are set by local councils. Parking fines have not increased since 2004.

The biggest increase will apply to mobility carparks. From today, the fine for using a mobility carpark without a valid permit will be $750, up from $150. Fees for towing and storing impounded vehicles will also increase.

Fines and parking time limits ensure parks are not ‘hogged’, so everyone has an opportunity to use them. This helps make sure parking remains fair and accessible.

Although parking fines are set by the government they are collected by local councils and are reinvested into maintaining and improving parking facilities and infrastructure.
