For the first time in twenty years, parking fines are going up. Central Government sets fines for the whole country, unlike parking fees, which are set by local councils. The biggest increase will apply to mobility carparks. From Tuesday 1 October, the fine for using a mobility carpark without a valid permit is $750. Fees for towing and storing impounded vehicles also increase from October.
Government-set increases: In August, Government announced a rise in parking fines, most by about 70%.
Towage and storage: Towage fees will rise by 68%, and storage and mileage fees by 98%.
Why do we have parking fines?: Fines and parking time limits ensure parks are not ‘hogged’, so everyone has an opportunity to use them. This helps make sure parking remains fair and accessible for everyone.
Where does the money go?: Parking fines are set by the Government, but they are collected by local councils and are reinvested into maintaining and improving parking facilities and infrastructure. This benefits the entire community.
