Restoration work is underway on the Veronica Sunbay, named for the heroic efforts of the HMS Veronica’s officers and crew to help Napier following the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake.
The Sunbay was first renovated in 1991 and re-dedicated as a memorial on the 60th anniversary of the earthquake, on 3 February that year.
This time, the columns, beams, rafters, and roof are being replaced. It will resemble the original 1934 structure as much as possible, while meeting modern building standards. It is still worth taking a walk past the Marine Parade icon in its de-constructed state. The story of the Veronica is displayed on the fence around the work site. The fence around the restored Sunbay is due to come down by early 2025.
