Over the past year we’ve been looking at Napier’s democratic arrangements to ensure the Council best serves the needs of our city’s residents.
After two surveys, we consulted on keeping our ward-based system (that is, not having councillors-at-large), reducing from four general wards to three, dropping Council’s size by on person and introducing one city-wide Maori ward. The new arrangements will come into place at the next election in October 2025.
Soon after this consultation, we were required by the Government to ask Napier residents if they supported Maori wards being introduced in the 2025 election, or whether Council should quash its decision to introduce them.
The consultation resulted in 54% being in favour of Maori wards. Council voted to proceed with introducing Maori wards in 2025.
