Napier’s new local democratic arrangements are now set in place, with a change to council’s headcount, number of wards, their names and boundaries.

Council voted today to adopt its Representation Review initial proposal as its final proposal, following community hearings held today. The new representation arrangements reduce councillors by one, and general wards from four to three, with boundary changes affecting between 7,500 and 8,000 residences.

Napier will now have three general wards, to be known as Ahuriri ward, Napier Central ward and Taradale ward. From the 2025 election, the city will also have its first ever Māori ward, representing the whole city with two councillors. This ward will be known as Te Whanga.

Suburbs within each electoral ward can be found at napier.govt.nz using the keyword search #representationreview.

The new arrangements will begin from the 2025 local elections. Napier’s next representation review must take place no later than 2031.
