A Marine Parade memorial recognising the HMS Veronica’s crew that helped in the aftermath of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake will undergo restoration work. A recent condition assessment has found sections of the memorial, next to the Soundshell, are potentially unsafe.
The structure known as the Veronica Sunbay was built in 1934. It was given its name in 1937, following the decommissioning of the HMS Veronica, the same year the ship’s bell was presented to the city.
The HMS Veronica docked in Napier a few hours before the Hawke’s Bay earthquake on 3 February 1931. Following the quake the ship’s officers and crew went ashore, conducting rescues, assisting the injured, and helping to ensure people were fed. The ship’s commander also alerted the HMS Philomel, now known as the Devonport Naval Base, Auckland, mere minutes after the quake.
The Sunbay is a place to reflect on the actions of the sailors from the HMS Veronica who did so much for Napier in a time of great need.
The ship’s bell is cared for by MTG Hawke’s Bay and is used on special community occasions.
The Sunbay’s first renovation was completed in early 1991. The Rotary Club of Napier project included contributions from Napier residents and Napier City Council. When this renovation was completed, the structure was re-dedicated as a memorial on the 60th anniversary of the earthquake.
This restoration is expected to be finished in December 2024. To stay up to date with the project, visit the Veronica Sunbay Restoration project page.
