Home to approximately 67,000 residents and cherished by countless visitors, Napier, our bustling seaside city, commemorates a significant milestone this November as it marks 150 years since becoming a borough in 1874.
In November 1874, provincial superintendent J D Ormond sought to make Napier self-sufficient in its finances and administration, and central government granted Napier municipal status.
Napier has a rich tapestry of heritage and, as the city commemorates this significant milestone, Council acknowledges a history that extends much further back than 1874.
Community groups are starting to look at how they can initiate, drive and host events that work for them and the people they serve.
The events planned include a Family Fun Day at Anderson Park, a Dawn Service on the official anniversary of 28 November and a host of other family-friendly activities. As well as reflecting on history, the events also focus on hope and positivity for the future.
Be sure to get involved in events that will be held between now and November to celebrate and acknowledge what makes Napier such a special place.
