Fees and charges at Ocean Spa are increasing as the facility moves towards becoming self sufficient.
After a review in 2023, Council agreed that Ocean Spa should become a financially self-sustainable commercial tourist facility within three years. This will reduce the ratepayer funding required to keep the facility running, improving the city’s financial sustainability.
This transition means charges beyond the usual annual increase are needed. Currently, ratepayers subsidise Ocean Spa, rather than it being user-pays. To balance the increase in General Admission charges, new discounted memberships are being introduced. These are an off-peak membership option, and a cheaper rate for Supergold card holders.
Many users of Ocean Spa are locals, not tourists. This includes older residents, who use the facility for fitness and wellbeing purposes. Ocean Spa is a place that all ages and fitness levels can enjoy.
As part of Council’s decision-making on its Three-Year Plan 2024-27, other areas of Ocean Spa’s pricing will be reviewed. This includes investigating the possibility of a ‘locals rate’, and gym-only and swim-only membership options. In the meantime, locals can benefit from reduced rates by purchasing concession cards.
There are no changes to the fee structures of existing memberships. All changes and increases will be implemented from 1 July 2024. Full details are at oceanspanapier.co.nz.
