Art deco will be shown in a ‘modern light’ when the Dalton Street North laneway gets its new light installation, a contemporary take of the art deco Napier is known for.
The laneway project – Circa - is the work of Angus Muir, lighting specialists and local artist Ant Van Dorsten, and is part of Napier City Council’s City Vision Framework.
Steph Kennard, Napier Council’s City Activation lead, says the project has been a year in the making and is made possible through central government Better Off Funding.
“Spanning the length of the laneway, Circa will provide curated LED installations that will draw interest into the space,” explains Steph. “This is a well-used thoroughfare, mainly by pedestrians but also as a service lane for local bars, cafes and shops. This lighting will add to the existing street lights, enhance the amenity of the area and provide a sensory experience.”
“It’s a beautiful installation that gives a contemporary nod to Art Deco’s iconic forms, shapes and silhouettes,” says Steph.
Councillor Sally Crown has been a supporter of the project since it first ‘came to light’.
“As a council we really want to help create spaces that might otherwise be under-utilised or over-looked, but which can provide a complimentary offering to our main retail precinct of Emerson Street,” says Councillor Crown. “For this project, we want to thank the various landlords who share the vision of the laneway and have allowed the use of their buildings for this special installation.”
Circa will be turned on each night from 5pm to midnight.
