In 2023 Napier City Council's organisational greenhouse gas emissions were 36,112 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is around 8% of the total greenhouse gas emissions from Napier.
Earlier this year, Council completed its first greenhouse gas inventory. The measured emissions include all Council activities for the city, for example, streetlights and kerbside waste collection. The top emission sources for NCC are purchased goods and services (44%), capital projects (20%), waste (13%), and wastewater treatment (8%).
Now that Council understands its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, work can begin to reduce these emissions, while balancing cost and the ability to deliver the services and activities that the community expects.
The inventory was independently verified by external auditors, Opportune Ltd. Verification is an important step to ensure a true representation of Council’s emissions. The data is from the 2023 financial year and will become the baseline for setting emission reduction targets and measuring progress.
Next steps include committing to an emission reduction target and developing an emission reduction plan.
