Napier, New Zealand, our bustling, seaside city celebrates 150 years in November 2024. About 67,000 of us call Napier home. Thousands more come to visit every yearand have much-loved lasting memories of time spent here.
In 1874, provincial superintendent J D Ormond sought to make Napier self-sufficient in its finances and administration, and central government granted Napier municipal status.
Napier has a rich tapestry of heritage and, as the city commemorates this significant milestone, we are proud of a history that extends much further back than 1874. We are taking this opportunity to honour those who went before us, their foresight, resilience and spirit; we are telling some of their stories, celebrating their strength and determination, and remembering what went in to making our vibrant and thriving little city.
At times, our community has been challenged, but in the face of adversity we’ve always worked together to find our way through. We’ve built back better, forging strong connections and partnerships along the way.
We have always been a place of manaakitanga, hospitality, trade and enterprise. We’ve been a gathering place, and a place of celebration and commemoration. This year, we look back on where we’ve come from, and in so doing we take stock of the things that make us special, that add to the greater good of Aotearoa New Zealand, that ensure our visitors return and our locals – no matter how long they’ve been away - come home.
We’re hosting, enabling and supporting many commemorative events, starting in July and running until December. Check back here for information as more details become available.
The laying of the korowai or traditional Māori cloak (base of The Spirit of Napier in logo) on the ground symbolises making this place home. The Spirit of Napier sculpture represents our city ‘rising from the ashes’ following the devastating 1931 earthquake. These two concepts form the core of our 150th brand identity.
Are you planning an event that could be part of Napier's 150th commemoration festivities? Perhaps you have historical photos or stories that would be of interest to the people of Napier? Do you want to lend a hand? If so, please email napier150@napier.govt.nz to see how we may be able to support you or share your stories.
